Route

Explanation:

I wanted to draw my route so I could visit the most famous locations of the United States (Niagara Falls, Yellowstone Park, Grand Canyon …). However, it is impossible to go everywhere, so it was necessary to make choices!

I decided to start in New York City because it is one of the nearest destinations from France, so theoretically cheaper regarding plane tickets (compared to cities in the South of the country or in the West coast, for example). Moreover, The Big Apple is a city that everybody knows and that I have wanted to visit for a long time, so I thought it was perfect to make my first steps in the US! My choice to go around anticlockwise is explained by the fact that:

  • I will start with short stages and many pauses in large cities (NY, Boston, Cleveland, Chicago) in order to « warm up ».
  • The weather will be better if I cross the North in summer and, in addition to that, the hurricane season in the south-east of the country extends from June to November (see Katrina in New Orleans on August 29, 2005): starting by the North, I will avoid them.

The route has been changed many times yet, and will certainly be again during the trip, depending on the people I’ll meet and climatic conditions.

ENG OK

Estimates:

  • forecast dates of the trip: from June 20th, 2015 to June 19th, 2016
  • total distance: 9,692 miles
  • number of days I need to visit big cities: 106
  • days of cycling: 366-106 = 260 (2016 is a leap year)
  • daily average distance cycled: 9,692/260 = 37.3 miles
That distance equals to 60.0 km. Instead of cycling 60 km every day, I rather think I’ll cycle an average of 80 km (49.7 miles) on three days, so I could rest on the fourth day. The distance will be the same at the end.

UPDATE: the routes and distances actually changed, please check the travelogue! 🙂
